It’s after dinner, and there’s a hankering for dessert. But you shouldn’t right? Because dessert is bad right? Doesn’t have to be!
If you’ve been anywhere around the whole-foods scene then you would have no doubt come across a version of chocolate mousse made from avocados. You know the type I mean – Have you tried making it? Well if you haven’t, didn’t think it was as good as it promised to be, or in fact are sitting there like I did the first time I heard of it re-reading that sentence going “chocolate mousse made from avocado’s – what?” – well have I got a treat for you.
I have tried a number of recipes for this little dish, and have modified and tweaked ingredients and quantities until I have made it just perfect for my demanding little taste buds. Of course everyone is a little different so always feel free to modify sweeteners etc for your own likeness. Now to be honest, the term ‘mousse’ is somewhat misleading, as the consistency is much heavier, but it’s delicious none the less, and I highly recommend you try it.
In addition to bring scrumptious, here’s just some of the health reasons why you should try it:
– Avocados are a source of flavonoid rich poly-phenolic antioxidants that have many health promoting and anti-ageing properties; mono-unsaturated fatty acids with anti-inflammatory and cardiovascular benefits; Vitamins A, E, and K; potassium and magnesium
– Cacao, when raw and organic, has become famous for it’s antioxidant content, which, like the antioxidants in avocados, have health promoting and anti-ageing properties; and high magnesium content, that can assist in many physiological functions from relaxing tired muscles to reducing blood pressure, just to name two.
So why not have dessert when in fact it’s good for you!!
1/2 cup raw cacao
1/4 cup raw honey- or other sweetener of choice such as rice malt syrup, agave etc
2 tbs EV cold pressed coconut oil
1 tsp pure vanilla bean extract
1/4 tsp cinnamon
generous pinch of Himalayan salt
Place all in a blender and blitz until smooth! That’s it! Top with anything you like – nuts, shredded coconut, dried berries, fresh berries – go crazy.
Refrigerate if you like a firmer consistency, or eat straight away enjoying the smooth velvety texture. Last but not least, make a note to make twice as much next time around
